Una troupe cinematografica, armata di cineprese e di registratori, penetra nella foresta amazzonica per realizzare un documentario sugli indios Shirishama. Nel corso del cammino si imbattono in Paul Sarone (Jon Voight), che è rimasto bloccato a bordo di una barca senza equipaggio. Uomo solitario, ma ricco di carisma e completamente a suo agio nella foresta, Paul conquista la loro amicizia e fa di tutto per convincerli a scendere il fiume. L'avventuriero è impegnato in una sua personale e oscura missione: dare la caccia a una temibile anaconda lunga dodici metri.
