Dutch Schultz è un boss degli anni ruggenti di New York. Dixie Dwyer è un trombettista jazz. Dixie salva la vita a Dutch e per questo motivo diventa il suo pupillo. Il potente olandese fa quindi assumere il giovane musicista presso un famoso locale notturno, il "Cotton Club" gestito da un altro capo mafia, Owney Madden. Dutch ha anche un'amante, la bella Vera. Presto Dixie emigra sulla West Coast e diventa famoso a Hollywood, poi ritorna, ricco e famoso. Tra lui e Vera accade l'inevitabile. Tutto ruota intorno a un locale leggendario: il "Cotton Club".
