Benjamin Ford (Robert De Niro) è un ex soldato americano che ha combattuto in prima linea durante il conflitto in Bosnia. Per cercare di dimenticare gli orrori di cui è stato testimone e rimuovere i ricordi più dolorosi di un passato che continua a perseguitarlo, si è ritirato a vivere in una baita isolata sulle Montagne Rocciose. Qui, però, si imbatte presto in Emil Kovac (John Travolta), un ex militare di origine serba arrivato fin lì per chiudere dei conti in sospeso. Il loro incontro susciterà una serrata guerra fisica e psicologica durante la quale si riapriranno vecchie ferite e i segreti di entrambi verranno rivelati.
