Bob Woodward e Carl Bernstein, due giornalisti del Washington Post, indagano senza troppe speranze su cinque uomini arrestati mentre cercano di trafugare documenti del partito democratico. A poco a poco scoprono che tutti i collaboratori del presidente Nixon sono coinvolti nello scandalo. I due sono sottoposti a pressioni di ogni tipo perchè non rendano pubblici i risultati dell'inchiesta, ma loro non si fermano. Nasce così lo scandalo Watergate che costringe Nixon alle dimissioni.
