Mike
(De Niro), Nick (Walken) e Steven (Savage)lavorano in un'acciaieria di
Clayton, Pennsylvania, e nel tempo libero cacciano cervi. Vengono
chiamati alle armi per essere inviati in Vietnam, ma prima Steven sposa
Angela. In guerra, i tre amici subiscono una terribile prigionia. Quando
riescono a evadere,vengono separati: Steven è in un ospedale,
paralizzato; Nick si imbosca a Saigon, preda degli organizzatori di
roulette russa; Mike, tornato a casa, conforta Linda, la ragazza di
Nick; in una battuta di caccia, risparmia un cervo a portata di tiro;
convince poi Steven a ricongiungersi alla moglie. Di nuovo in una
caotica, infernale Saigon in completo disfacimento, Mike tenta invano di
impedire a Nick un'ultima, mortale partita.
