Nell'anno stellare 8454, sul pianeta Nimbus III, tre consoli sono presi in ostaggio da un mistico vulcaniano. Il comandante Kirk, affiancato dal fido Spock e dal dr. McCoy, è incaricato di risolvere la situazione e perciò viene frettolosamente spedito nello spazio a bordo dell'astronave "Enterprise" che peraltro è in condizioni operative ancora imperfette.
