Cinque professionisti cinquantenni: Perozzi (Noiret), Melandri (Moschin), Mascetti (Tognazzi), Necchi (Del Prete) e Sassaroli (Celi), sono amici inseparabili e burloni scatenati. Le loro avventure le chiamano "zingarate" e si svolgono nei pressi di Firenze. Il dottor Sassaroli ha conosciuto gli altri quattro quando questi, dopo un incidente, sono stati ricoverati nella sua clinica e da allora si è unito al gruppo. Nel loro mirino tutto e tutti (i passeggeri di un treno vengono schiaffeggiati), ma soprattutto il pensionato Righi, bersaglio dei loro lazzi perfino a un funerale.
