Joe Friday (Aykroyd) è un posato poliziotto di Los Angeles a cui il suo capo affianca il giovane Pep (Hanks), vivace e spregiudicato. Indagando su Jerry Caesar, trafficante di riviste pornografiche, i due finiscono per dover fronteggiare anche il reverendo Whirley. Costui è un acceso moralista in apparenza, ma in realtà spera di estorcere un milione di dollari a Caesar e di fuggire all'estero dopo aver sterminato la giunta municipale. Joe e Pep riusciranno a sventare il piano.
