Il giovane Jeffrey denuncia alla polizia di aver trovato un orecchio nel prato vicino a casa; insieme a Sandy, la figlia del tenente per la quale ha preso una cotta, si immischia un po' troppo di faccende che non lo riguardano. Finisce per trovarsi nel letto di Dorothy, cantante di night ricattata dal perfido Frank, e poi viene preso in ostaggio dagli scagnozzi del gangster. Lynch lavora con intelligenza sugli stereotipi del genere per sovvertirli dall'interno; il tutto all'insegna della sgradevolezza premeditata e di una narrazione che scivola progressivamente verso l'incubo. Il riusltato è una visione sulla perdita dell'innocenza, in cui bene e male non si distinguono.
