Finisce per trovarsi nel letto di Dorothy, cantante di night ricattata dal perfido Frank, e poi viene preso in ostaggio dagli scagnozzi del gangster. Lynch lavora con intelligenza sugli stereotipi del genere per sovvertirli dall'interno; il tutto all'insegna della sgradevolezza premeditata e di una narrazione che scivola progressivamente verso l'incubo. Il riusltato è una visione sulla perdita dell'innocenza, in cui bene e male non si distinguono.
