All'inizio del secolo a Nome, una città dell'Alaska, scoppia un'epidemia di difterite, di cui i bambini sono le principali vittime. Le scorte di medicinali indispensabili per debellare la malattia sono però a Mercy e nessun mezzo di trasporto meccanico riesce a collegare le due città a causa della neve. Parte quindi una slitta tirata dai cani (il cui leader è il borioso Steele) che però si perde. Sarà il mezzo lupo e mezzo cane Balto a ritrovare la spedizione.
