Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz) è un’insegnante di scuola media non proprio impeccabile e il lavoro è per lei solo un mezzo come un altro per sostentarsi. Ama bere, fare tardi la sera e in più sogna di poter abbandonare ben presto la cattedra per sposare il ricco fidanzato e cambiare vita definitivamente. L’uomo però la lascia ad un passo dal matrimonio ed Elizabeth è costretta ad accettare un altro semestre di insegnamento. Ha così l’occasione di conoscere un nuovo supplente, Scott (Justin Timberlake), erede di una ricca famiglia, ma per conquistarlo deve vincere la concorrenza della miglior insegnante dell’istituto, Amy (Lucy Punch), che ha fatto colpo proprio sul giovane. A complicare la vita scolastica di Elizabeth ci si mette anche Russell (Jason Segel), l’irriverente insegnante di educazione fisica, con cui non va di certo d'amore e d'accordo.
