Nella giungla birmana alcuni ufficiali e soldati inglesi sono prigionieri dei giapponesi. Questi ultimi impongono agli inglesi di costruire un ponte, essenziale per i loro trasporti di guerra. I prigionieri si rifiutano di farlo. Ma in un secondo tempo, il colonnello comandante degli inglesi Nicholson, per dimostrare la propria superiorità, si dedica con i suoi alla costruzione di un ponte imponente, mettendosi per così dire in competizione con gli avversari in una specie di paradossale fanatismo patriottico.
