Mentre lavora con l'autore e collega Henderson su un romanzo, il traduttore David Moerk riceve una commissione dal suo editore: tradurre un manoscritto del famoso scrittore Germund Rein. Il manoscritto è accompagnato da una lettera in cui Rein afferma che il libro non può essere pubblicato nella sua lingua originale. David si mette dunque subito al lavoro e si rende presto conto che Rein si è apparentemente suicidato. Scopre anche che all'interno della finzione narrativa ci sono molti elementi della vita reale dello scrittore, ritrovandosi catturato dal suo oscuro passato.
