Lincoln Jefferson è un veterano della Marina – ora bidello in una prestigiosa scuola media in California – che cerca di recuperare il rapporto con il figlio dopo il divorzio. Un giorno, in seguito a un banale controllo della polizia, il ragazzo viene ucciso ma l'agente colpevole di avergli sparato viene dichiarato innocente senza essere processato. Deluso dal fatto di non aver avuto un procedimento equo, Lincoln prenderà in ostaggio l'intera stazione di polizia, mettendo su lui stesso un vero e proprio processo dove la giuria sono i detenuti e la gente comune, sostituendosi di fatto allo Stato per dare finalmente giustizia al figlio.
