I quattro membri della famiglia di Ki-taek sono molto uniti, ma anche molto disoccupati, e hanno davanti a loro un futuro incerto. La speranza di un’entrata regolare si accende quando il figlio, Ki-woo, viene raccomandato da un amico, studente in una prestigiosa università, per un lavoro ben pagato come insegnante privato. Con sulle spalle il peso delle aspettative di tutta la famiglia, Ki-woo si presenta al colloquio dai Park. Arrivato a casa del signor Park, proprietario di una multinazionale informatica, Ki-woo incontra la bella figlia Yeon-kyo. Ma dopo il primo incontro fra le due famiglie, una serie inarrestabile di disavventure e incidenti giace in agguato.
