Il 22 agosto 1972, tre balordi assaltano una banca di Brooklyn. Uno dei tre si tira subito indietro e scappa; Sal e Sonny restano intrappolati nei locali della banca dopo l'intervento fortuito della polizia. Ha inizio un allucinante e per certi aspetti grottesco braccio di ferro tra i due rapinatori e le forze dell'ordine: in mezzo c'è il personale della banca.
