I coniugi Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender e Alicia Vikander) stanno facendo di tutto per avere un figlio, ma senza successo, quando trovano una neonata abbandonata in una barca alla deriva e la allevano in segreto come fosse loro. Ben presto quella creatura vivace e sempre bisognosa d’attenzione diventa la luce della loro vita, finché non scopriranno che la vera madre della piccola (Rachel Weisz) sono anni che la cerca senza riuscire a darsi pace.
