Un millennio d'anni dopo che la Terra è stata colpita dai cataclismi che hanno costretto il genere umano a trasferirsi sul pianeta Nova Prime, il generale Cypher Raige (Will Smith) rientra a casa dopo una lunga missione ed è pronto a far da padre al figlio tredicenne Kitai (Jaden Smith). Mentre si trovano a bordo della loro astronave, Cypher e Kitai vengono colpiti da una tempesta di asteroidi che li fa precipitare sulla Terra, divenuta nel frattempo molto selvaggia e pericolosa.
