Crunch Calhoun (Kurt Russell), temerario motociclista di terz'ordine e ladro di opere d'arte semi-riformato, si impegna nel portare a termine un ultimo ma redditizio furto insieme all'inaffidabile fratello Nicky (Matt Dillon). Dopo aver ricomposto la sua vecchia squadra, Crunch organizza nel dettaglio il furto di un libro antico dall'inestimabile valore ma il successo del colpo porta a un altro piano, molto più rischioso, messo a punto da Nicky. Ciò di cui i due fratelli non si rendono conto è che hanno entrambi obiettivi diversi da mettere a segno e che i loro piani, andando per il verso sbagliato, rimetteranno in discussione il significato di fratellanza, onore e vendetta.
