Una coppia sposata si trova ad affrontare una tragica prova. Mentre Jack se ne va di casa per misurarsi con il lutto, Lilly rimane nel "mondo reale" alle prese con il proprio senso di colpa e una paralizzante lotta interna legata alla consapevolezza di dover vivere con un oscuro segreto. Come se tutto ciò non fosse abbastanza, uno storno fa il nido nel giardino della donna e inizia a importunarla e attaccarla. Metafora di tutti i suoi problemi, l'uccello diventa una comica ossessione per Lilly, che cerca in tutti i modi di liberarsene. Sarà l'incontro con Larry, bizzarro psicologo con un passato tormentato e divenuto veterinario, a far nascere un'amicizia unica e improbabile tra i due, che li aiuterà a esplorare, riconoscere e affrontare i propri problemi.
