Andrew (Dane DeHaan), Matt (Alex Russel) e Steve (Michael B. Jordan), tre studenti liceali, scoprono, dopo essere caduti, in una buca di possedere incredibili poteri sovrannaturali, che permettono loro di volare, spostarsi rapidamente e muovere gli oggetti con la sola forza del pensiero. Mentre in un primo momento decidono di non mostrare i poteri in pubblico e di utilizzarli per combattere le malefatte di cui sono testimoni, con il passare del tempo Andrew rompe le promesse fatte agli amici e comincia a usarli per scopi egoistici e dare sfogo alla sua rabbia repressa, andando incontro a una lotta impari con il lato oscuro della propria coscienza.
